6 Things We Wish Everyone Knew Before Their First Wellness Retreat
Sep 10, 2026If you’ve never been on a wellness retreat before, it’s very easy to create a version of one in your head that is much more intimidating than the actual experience.
Will everyone already know each other? Do you have to be really good at yoga? Is everyone going to be super spiritual? Are you going to spend six days talking about your feelings with strangers? And what exactly do people do all day?
After hosting retreats with people of different ages, backgrounds, personalities, and levels of experience, we’ve realized that first-time guests tend to have many of the same questions and concerns.
So if you’re considering your first retreat, here are six things we wish you knew before you go.

1. Coming Alone Is Completely Normal
One of the biggest concerns we hear from first-time retreat guests is that they don’t have anyone to come with them.
The good news? You probably won’t be the only one.
Retreats are actually one of our favorite ways to travel solo because they give you the best parts of solo travel without requiring you to navigate the entire experience alone.
You can book the trip without coordinating schedules, budgets, or PTO with a friend. But once you arrive, you already have people to eat with, explore with, attend activities with, and get to know.
And because everyone is experiencing something new together, connection tends to happen much faster than it does in everyday life.
You may arrive alone. That doesn’t mean you’ll experience the retreat alone.
2. You Don’t Have to Be “Good” at Yoga
You are not auditioning for anything.
You don’t have to be able to touch your toes, do a handstand, know the names of every pose, or have a consistent yoga practice at home.
At Create Your Fate Retreats, movement is there to support the experience—not to test your flexibility or fitness level.
Depending on the retreat, movement may include yoga, strength, somatic practices, intuitive movement, hiking, or other ways of getting into your body. And our different retreat styles have different focuses, so you can choose an experience that aligns with what you actually enjoy.
The goal is participation, not performance.
3. You Also Don’t Have to Be Extremely Spiritual
Love meditation? Great.
Never meditated before? Also great.
Own 47 crystals? Bring your favorite.
Own zero crystals and aren’t entirely sure what people do with them? You’ll be just fine.
There isn’t a specific personality required to enjoy a wellness retreat.
People sometimes imagine retreats as places where everyone already speaks the same wellness language or has spent years doing personal-development work. In reality, people arrive with completely different levels of experience.
Curiosity goes a lot further than expertise.
4. Nobody Is Going to Force You to Share Your Deepest Secrets
Yes, meaningful conversations happen on retreats.
No, you are not required to tell a room full of strangers your entire life story on night one.
There’s an important difference between creating an environment where people can be vulnerable and creating one where people feel pressured to be vulnerable.
We believe the first is powerful. The second isn't how we operate.
You decide what you share, what you process privately, and how deeply you engage with different parts of the experience.
Sometimes a breakthrough happens during a coaching session or breathwork practice. Sometimes it happens during a conversation over breakfast. Sometimes you simply realize something while staring at a mountain.
There is no correct way to have a meaningful retreat experience.
5. There Is Room to Be a Person
A wellness retreat does not mean being in “personal growth mode” every waking minute.
You can have an emotional morning and spend the afternoon laughing at the pool.
You can love being around the group and decide you want an hour alone.
You can have a powerful practice and then immediately start thinking about what’s for dinner.
In fact, we think the balance matters.
Our retreats intentionally include programming, movement, excursions, meals, connection, and time to simply enjoy the destination. You're traveling somewhere incredible. We want you to actually experience it.
Rest, fun, laughter, adventure, and downtime aren't interruptions to the retreat. They're part of it.

6. People Usually Connect Much Faster Than They Expect
Making friends as an adult can be awkward.
Meeting people on a retreat is different because so many of the usual barriers have already been removed.
You’re eating meals together. You’re moving together. You’re exploring somewhere new together. You’re trying things for the first time together. And nobody has to send the dreaded, “We should totally hang out sometime!” text and then spend three months finding a mutually available Tuesday.
Shared experiences give people something real to connect over immediately.
That doesn’t mean every person on every retreat becomes your new best friend. But we’ve watched friendships form quickly, guests travel together after retreats, and people return for another retreat with friends they originally met through us.
The social part is often one of the things first-time guests worry about most—and one of the things they end up loving most.
The Biggest Thing We Wish You Knew
You don’t have to become a different version of yourself before you come.
You don’t have to get in better shape first. You don’t have to convince a friend to join you. You don’t have to become more spiritual, more outgoing, more flexible, or more experienced with personal development.
At Create Your Fate Retreats, we intentionally create experiences where different personalities, backgrounds, and experience levels can feel comfortable.
Come alone. Come a little nervous. Come without knowing exactly what to expect.
You can show up exactly as you are and let the experience unfold from there.
